Forty-five students of various universities have pledged
to become ambassadors of peaceful change and work for
the rule of law and good governance.At a graduation
ceremony upon completion of course on “Youth Capacities
for the Rule of Law and Good Governance” by Centre for
Civic Education Pakistan they vowed to actively engaged
in their community concerns and create a tolerant
society. Noor Amna Malik, Director General, Learning
Innovation Division of the Higher Education Commission
of Pakistan, was the chief guest on the occasion and
distributed certificates among the students from eleven
public and private universities from Islamabad, NWFP,
Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The program is
supported by the British High Commission, Islamabad.
Speaking on the occasion, Noor Amna Malik said that she
was delighted to see the capacitated students with the
spirit to work for the betterment of Pakistan. “We as a
nation are confronted with enormous challenges and the
young people through their energy and vision can help
improve situation,” she added. She emphasized that the
Pakistani youth possessed unique talent and require
enabling environment to serve the country.
Zafarullah Khan executive director of the Centre for
Civic Education said, “The young people constitute major
chunk of country’s population and their creative
approaches can bring hope and progress.” The course
comprised of five modules covered themes like;
citizenship in the age of globalization, Islam in the
contemporary world, causes of extremism and violence and
impact on youth, civic activism for the rule of law and
good governance and communication, negotiation and
conflict resolution skills.
One of
the participating student noted that the training
workshops on the five modules have been remarkable days
of her life. “I am a changed person and now I am more
conscious about my rights and obligations to add beauty
to the image of my country,’” she added. Another student
remarked: “the contents of these modules were very
highly relevant and I like the way very experienced
resource persons shared their knowledge and skills with
us.” This course has awakened a new sense of
self-recognition in me; a spirit to do something
productive as it is we, the youth, who are going to
mould the future of Pakistan, commented another
student.These graduates will be taking the spirit of the
program to their campuses and will share their knowledge
and skills with fellow students. The faculty members of
the participating institutions will serve as the mentors
to expand the concept of active citizenship and make the
universities ‘hubs of hope” for better Pakistan. |
